Nucleic acids are nucleotide polymers (DNA, RNA) that store and express genetic information.

Nucleic acids are biopolymers built from repeating monomer units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide is made of three parts: a nitrogenous base (a purine — adenine, guanine; or a pyrimidine — cytosine, thymine/uracil), a pentose sugar (deoxyribose in DNA, ribose in RNA), and a phosphate group, all linked through phosphodiester bonds to form a long chain. There are two types of nucleic acids — deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).
