EM induction = an EMF appears whenever flux through a circuit changes; Faraday's laws give ε=−N dΦB/dt\varepsilon=-N\,d\Phi_B/dt.

Electromagnetic induction. Whenever the magnetic flux ΦB\Phi_B linked with a closed circuit changes — by moving a magnet/coil, changing the current in a neighbouring coil, or changing the coil's area or orientation — an EMF (and, if the circuit is closed, a current) is set up in the circuit. This phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction (discovered by Faraday).

Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction.

  1. First law. Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a circuit changes, an EMF is induced in it; the induced EMF lasts only so long as the flux keeps changing.
  2. Second law. The magnitude of the induced EMF is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage. For a coil of NN turns, ε=−NdΦBdt=−d(NΦB)dt\varepsilon = -N\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt} = -\frac{d(N\Phi_B)}{dt} …
