Lenz's law: induced current opposes the flux change; the work done against this opposition equals the electrical energy produced, so it follows energy conservation.

Lenz's law. The direction of the induced EMF and current in a circuit is always such as to oppose the very change of magnetic flux that produces it. This gives the negative sign in Faraday's law:

ε=−dΦBdt\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt}

Lenz's law follows energy conservation. Consider pushing the north pole of a magnet toward a coil. By Lenz's law the near face of the coil becomes a north pole, which repels the approaching magnet. To keep pushing the magnet in, the person must do work against this repulsive force.

If, instead, the induced current aided the motion (attracted the magnet), the magnet would accelerate on its own, inducing an ever-larger current and producing electrical + kinetic energy from nothing — a perpetual-motion machine, which is impossible.
