An AC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction: a rotating coil in a magnetic field has continuously changing flux, inducing a sinusoidal emf.

Main question — A.C. Generator:

[FIGURE: AC generator schematic — a rectangular armature coil (many turns, wound on a soft-iron core) mounted on an axle so it can rotate between the poles of a strong field magnet (N and S poles), producing a uniform magnetic field BB perpendicular to the rotation axis. The two ends of the coil are connected to two separate slip rings, mounted on and rotating with the axle. Two fixed carbon brushes press against the slip rings and connect the rotating coil to the external circuit/load.]

Principle: The AC generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction (Faraday's law): when the magnetic flux linked with a coil changes with time, an emf is induced in the coil.

Working: The armature coil is mechanically rotated (by a turbine, engine, etc.) with a constant angular velocity ω\omega inside the uniform field BB. If the coil has NN turns, each of area AA, and at time tt the normal to the coil makes angle θ=ωt\theta=\omega t with B⃗\vec B, the flux linked with the coil is

Φ=NBAcos⁡(ωt)\Phi = NBA\cos(\omega t)

By Faraday's law, the induced emf is

ε=−dΦdt=NBA ωsin⁡(ωt)=ε0sin⁡(ωt)\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi}{dt} = NBA\,\omega\sin(\omega t) = \varepsilon_0\sin(\omega t)

where ε0=NBAω\varepsilon_0 = NBA\omega is the peak emf. As the coil rotates, this emf reverses direction every half rotation, producing a sinusoidally alternating emf, which drives an alternating current through the external circuit via the slip rings and brushes.
