EM waves are transverse: E⃗\vec{E}, B⃗\vec{B} and the direction of propagation are mutually perpendicular.

Electromagnetic waves consist of time-varying electric field E⃗\vec{E} and magnetic field B⃗\vec{B} that oscillate sinusoidally, always perpendicular to each other, and both perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. Since the oscillating quantities (E⃗\vec{E} and B⃗\vec{B}) vary in a direction perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation (rather than along it, as in a sound/longitudinal wave), electromagnetic waves are said to be transverse waves. For a wave travelling along the x-axis, if E⃗\vec{E} oscillates along y, then B⃗\vec{B} oscillates along z, consistent with E⃗×B⃗\vec{E}\times\vec{B} pointing along the direction of propagation (x).
