Fission = splitting a heavy nucleus; fusion = combining light nuclei. Both convert mass defect into energy.

Nuclear Fission: A heavy unstable nucleus splits into two (or more) lighter nuclei of comparable mass, usually when bombarded with a neutron, releasing a large amount of energy and typically 2-3 more neutrons.

Example: 92235U+01n→56141Ba+3692Kr+3 01n+Energy^{235}_{92}\text{U} + {}^1_0n \rightarrow {}^{141}_{56}\text{Ba} + {}^{92}_{36}\text{Kr} + 3\,{}^1_0n + \text{Energy}

This is the process used in nuclear reactors and fission (atomic) bombs.

Nuclear Fusion: Two or more light nuclei combine to form a single heavier nucleus, releasing an enormous amount of energy, but only under conditions of extremely high temperature and pressure (needed to overcome mutual Coulomb repulsion).

Example: 12H+12H→23He+01n+Energy{}^2_1\text{H} + {}^2_1\text{H} \rightarrow {}^3_2\text{He} + {}^1_0n + \text{Energy} (as occurs in the Sun and stars, and in the hydrogen bomb).
