Both symbols show a base line with emitter and collector leads; the emitter arrow points out of the transistor for n-p-n and into it for p-n-p.

Concept. A junction transistor is a three-terminal device — Emitter (E), Base (B) and Collector (C). In the circuit symbol the base is a straight bar, and the emitter carries an arrowhead. The arrow always points in the direction of conventional current flow across the emitter–base junction, which is why it distinguishes the two types.

n-p-n transistor. The emitter arrow points away from the base (outward) — mnemonic: "Not Pointing iN." The emitter–base junction is forward biased so conventional current flows from base to emitter, i.e. out through the emitter lead.
