Forward bias (p to +, n to -) lowers the junction barrier and conducts; reverse bias (p to -, n to +) raises it and blocks current.

Forward Bias: The p-n junction diode is said to be forward biased when the p-side (anode) is connected to the positive terminal of the external battery, and the n-side (cathode) is connected to the negative terminal. This external field opposes the internal built-in field of the depletion region, narrowing the depletion layer and lowering the potential barrier. Once the applied voltage exceeds the barrier potential (~0.6-0.7 V for silicon), majority carriers flow easily across the junction, and a large forward current flows.

Circuit: Battery (+) -> p-side of diode -> n-side of diode -> resistor -> Battery (-), forming a series loop with the diode's arrow (p-side) pointing towards the battery's positive terminal.
