Forward bias connects the battery's positive terminal to the p-side; reverse bias connects it to the n-side.

Forward bias circuit: A p-n junction diode is connected to a battery such that the positive terminal of the battery is joined (through a resistor, to limit current) to the p-side of the diode, and the negative terminal to the n-side. This reduces the potential barrier at the junction, and a (usually) large current flows through the circuit for even a small applied voltage — the circuit is drawn as: battery(+) — resistor — p-side | n-side — battery(−), with the diode symbol's arrowhead (p-side) pointing towards the direction of conventional current flow.
