Q.[FIGURE: Two p-n junction diode circuits.

(i) A diode with its p-side terminal marked −2V-2\text{V} and its n-side terminal (after the diode) marked −4V-4\text{V}, no separate battery drawn.
(ii) A battery (cell) connected in series with a diode, with the terminal after the diode marked +2V+2\text{V}.] In the given figure, two different biasings are done in the given p-n junction diode. Identify the biasing in each condition.

A diode is forward biased when its p-side is at a higher potential than its n-side, and reverse biased when the n-side is at a higher potential.

A p-n junction diode conducts easily (forward bias) when the p-side (anode) is kept at a higher electric potential than the n-side (cathode); it is reverse biased when the n-side is at a higher potential than the p-side.

Circuit (i): the p-side terminal is at −2-2 V and the n-side terminal is at −4-4 V. Comparing potentials: Vp−Vn=(−2)−(−4)=+2 V>0V_p - V_n = (-2)-(-4) = +2\text{ V} > 0, so the p-side is at the higher potential ⇒\Rightarrow the diode is forward biased.

Circuit (ii): the terminal on the n-side (cathode) is held at +2+2 V by the battery, which is higher than the potential of the p-side. Since the n-side is at the higher potential, the diode is reverse biased.

OR — Zener diode: A Zener diode is a heavily-doped p-n junction diode designed to operate in reverse breakdown without being destroyed. It is chiefly used as a voltage regulator, providing a constant reference/output voltage across a load even when the input voltage or load current varies.
