Difference between polarised and unpolarised light.
- Unpolarised light: the electric field vector vibrates randomly in all possible directions in the plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation, with no preferred plane. Light from ordinary sources (sun, lamp) is unpolarised.
- Plane-polarised light: the electric field vibrations are confined to a single plane containing the direction of propagation. (The confinement is possible because light is a transverse wave — this is proof of transverse nature.)
