Interference = superposition of coherent waves ⇒ bright/dark bands. Bright when path difference =nλ=n\lambda; dark when =(2n−1)λ/2=(2n-1)\lambda/2.

Definition. When two light waves of the same frequency and a constant phase relationship (coherent waves) travel in the same region and superpose, the resultant intensity at a point is not simply the sum of the two — it is larger at some points and smaller (even zero) at others. This redistribution of light energy is called the interference of light. Points of maximum intensity are bright fringes (constructive interference); points of minimum intensity are dark fringes (destructive interference).

Conditions for constructive interference (bright fringe). The two waves must arrive in phase:

path difference Δx=nλ,n=0,1,2,…\text{path difference } \Delta x = n\lambda,\quad n=0,1,2,\dots

phase difference δ=2nπ\text{phase difference } \delta = 2n\pi

Resultant amplitude and intensity are maximum (Imax=(I1+I2)2I_{max}=(\sqrt{I_1}+\sqrt{I_2})^2).

Conditions for destructive interference (dark fringe). The two waves must arrive out of phase: …
