Question of 46

Q.Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below - Light entering in a dark room through a narrow gap under or around a closed door often appears to bend and spread. This is due to diffraction, the narrow gap acts like a slit, and light wave bends around the edges. This phenomenon is a small but clear demonstration of diffraction.

(c) Explain the phenomenon of diffraction on the basis of wave theory of light.

Huygens' secondary wavelets from the exposed part of the wavefront spread and interfere, bending light into the geometrical shadow.

By Huygens' principle, every point of a wavefront is a source of secondary wavelets spreading out in all directions. When a wavefront is incident on a narrow slit or passes the edge of an obstacle, only the portion of the wavefront within the opening remains to generate secondary wavelets. These wavelets, travelling not just straight ahead but also somewhat sideways, spread into the region that would otherwise be a sharp geometrical shadow. Where these secondary wavelets overlap, they interfere: constructive interference produces bright regions (even partly inside the 'shadow'), and destructive interference produces dark regions, so light bends around the edge and a pattern of varying intensity, not a sharp boundary, is observed. This bending of light around the edges of a slit or obstacle due t …
