A goitre is a visible, palpable enlargement of the thyroid gland, appearing as a swelling in the front of the neck. It is most commonly caused by iodine deficiency (simple goitre), in which low T3/T4 output removes the normal negative-feedback restraint on TSH, so persistently high TSH over-stimulates and enlarges the iodine-starved gland even though its hormone output stays low.
