The Richmond-Lang effect refers to the classic experimental demonstration that a leaf, once detached from the rest of the plant, senesces (yellows and loses metabolic activity) far more slowly if it is treated with cytokinin than an otherwise identical untreated detached leaf, which senesces at its normal, faster rate. Because a detached leaf is cut off from whatever cytokinin supply it would normally have received from the plant's root system (cytokinin is chiefly synthesised in root apices), this experiment isolates cytokinin's own effect on senescence from any other factor that might otherwise be at play in an intact plant. …
