The frog's heart has two thin-walled atria, right and left, above a single, thick-walled, muscular ventricle, all enclosed within the pericardium; a sinus venosus opens into the right atrium, and the pulmonary vein opens directly into the left atrium; a single vessel, the conus arteriosus, containing an internal spiral valve, leads away from the ventricle.
Step 2 — Path of blood into the heart. Deoxygenated blood returning from the body collects first in the sinus venosus and then enters the right atrium; oxygenated blood returning from the lungs and skin enters the left atrium directly via the pulmonary vein.
Step 3 — Mixing in the ventricle. Both atria empty into the single, undivided ventricle. Because the ventricle is not physically partitioned into two chambers, the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood streams do mix to some degree here — but differences in the timing of atrial contraction and the internal geometry of the ventricle prevent this mixing from being complete.
Step 4 — Separation by the conus arteriosus. As the ventricle contracts and forces blood out through the conus arteriosus, its internal spiral valve directs the relatively more deoxygenated blood preferentially into the pulmocutaneous arteries, which carry it to the lungs and skin to be reoxygenated (the pulmonary circuit), while directing the relatively more oxygenated blood preferentially into the systemic arches and carotid arteries, which distribute it to the rest of the body's tissues (the systemic circuit). …
