Step 1 — Buccal cavity. Food is caught by the bilobed, protrusible tongue (attached at the front of the lower jaw) and held, not chewed, by small maxillary and vomerine teeth.

Step 2 — Oesophagus. A short, wide, muscular tube conducts the food from the buccal cavity to the stomach.

Step 3 — Stomach. A curved, J-shaped, muscular sac on the left side of the body cavity, where food is churned and mixed with gastric juice, beginning digestion (particularly of proteins) and producing partly digested chyme.

Step 4 — Small intestine. Divided into the duodenum (into which the liver's bile duct and the pancreatic duct both open) and the longer, coiled ileum. Here digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats is completed with the combined action of bile and pancreatic juice, and the resulting nutrients are absorbed into the blood across the intestinal wall.
