Worked example. Suppose the true mass of an object is exactly g, and it is weighed three times on a balance:
- If the balance reads g, g, g — the three readings are extremely close to each other (a spread of only g), so the balance is precise. But every reading is about g away from the true value of g, so the balance is not accurate — most likely because of an uncorrected zero error, a systematic error.
- If instead the balance reads g, g, g — these readings vary more amongst themselves (less precise), but their average, g, is very close to the true value, so the balance is reasonably accurate on average. …
