Q.Under Merrick's Differential Piece Rate Method, the standard output is fixed at 200 units per day and the Normal Piece Rate is ₹10 per unit. The applicable rates are: 100% of Normal Piece Rate for efficiency below 83% of standard; 110% of Normal Piece Rate for efficiency from 83% up to 100% of standard; and 120% of Normal Piece Rate for efficiency of 100% and above. Three workers, X, Y and Z, produce 150, 190 and 210 units respectively in a day. Compute the wages of each worker.

Step 1 — Compute each worker's efficiency (Actual Output ÷ Standard Output × 100):

  • Worker X: 150 ÷ 200 × 100 = 75%
  • Worker Y: 190 ÷ 200 × 100 = 95%
  • Worker Z: 210 ÷ 200 × 100 = 105%

Step 2 — Identify the applicable rate band for each:

  • X at 75% falls BELOW 83% → rate = 100% of Normal Piece Rate = ₹10 per unit
  • Y at 95% falls in the 83%–100% band → rate = 110% of Normal Piece Rate = ₹11 per unit
  • Z at 105% falls in the ≥100% band → rate = 120% of Normal Piece Rate = ₹12 per unit

Step 3 — Compute wages (rate applies to the worker's ENTIRE output, as in Taylor's Method): …
