NREGA was enacted (passed into law) in 2005, guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment per year to rural households; it began to be implemented in districts from February 2006 and was renamed MGNREGA in 2009.

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is one of India's major employment-generation programmes aimed at reducing rural unemployment and underemployment (including the disguised unemployment common in Indian agriculture). It legally guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work, with the dual aims of providing an income safety net and creating durable rural assets (roads, water conservation works, etc.).
