Yes. Earlier the demands on the environment were within its carrying capacity, so it could renew itself. The recent explosion of population, production and consumption pushed resource extraction and waste generation beyond that capacity, turning ordinary environmental stress into a modern crisis.

Was the crisis always there?

The environment has always supplied resources, absorbed waste and sustained life. For most of human history, however, the scale of human demand was small relative to what the environment could provide and absorb. Because these demands stayed within the carrying capacity of the environment, resources regenerated and waste was assimilated naturally, and there was no crisis.

Why the crisis is recent

The environmental crisis in its present acute form is a recent phenomenon, and this is because of a fundamental change:

  • Population explosion. A rapidly rising population multiplied the demand for resources and the volume of waste generated.
  • Advent of industrialisation. The pace of economic activity accelerated enormously, with intensive and extensive extraction of both renewable and non-renewable resources.
  • Supply–demand reversal. Earlier, the environment's capacity to supply resources and absorb waste exceeded the demands placed on it. Now the demand for resources and for waste-absorption has grown so large that it exceeds the rate of regeneration and the absorptive capacity of the environment. …
