Project III: A survey of the effect of social networking sites on behaviour of teenagers
The core idea of this project is to use data analysis to understand a real-world social issue: how social networking sites influence the behaviour of teenagers. You are not just learning to code; you are learning to ask meaningful questions, collect data, and find answers through computation.
The project begins with the observation that the internet has connected everyone, and teenagers in particular spend a significant amount of time on social networking sites. This heavy usage is believed to have a serious impact on their mental health and overall behaviour. A well-designed survey questionnaire is the tool that will help you explore and uncover these effects.
The project has five clear specifications. First, you must create a survey questionnaire using a free online tool like Google Forms. The responses you collect will be stored in a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file. Second, before you analyse the data, you need to prepare a set of data analysis questions — these are the specific questions you want the data to answer. Third, you will import that CSV file into a Pandas DataFrame, which is the primary data structure for analysis in Python. Fourth, you will perform statistical computations — such as calculating the mean and median — on the data, specifically targeting the questions you identified earlier. Finally, you will visualise your findings using appropriate charts, turning numbers into clear, visual stories.
The textbook does not provide a specific survey questionnaire or a sample dataset. The project expects you to design your own questionnaire, collect real responses, and then analyse that original data. The focus is on the entire workflow, from data creation to insight.
The project is structured as a sequence of steps, not a single code block. The key skills you will practice are:
