Equipment needed is a 20-inch-high bench or wooden block, a stopwatch and a metronome. On the command 'Go', the subject begins stepping up and down the bench at a steady rate of 30 steps per minute. The two-beat rhythm is specific: on the first metronome sound/'up' command, one foot goes onto the bench; on the second, both feet are placed fully on the bench with the body erect, legs and back straightened. This continues for exactly 5 minutes unless the subject can no longer maintain the pace, in which case the test ends early and is marked exhausted. …
