In a grassland ecosystem, the standing biomass of grasses (producers) considerably exceeds the biomass of the herbivores feeding on them, which in turn exceeds the biomass of the carnivores above them -- giving a broad-based, upright pyramid of biomass, the same general pattern as most terrestrial ecosystems. Step 2. In a pond ecosystem, the producers are microscopic phytoplankton with extremely short individual lifespans and very rapid reproduction and turnover -- they are consumed by zooplankton almost as fast as new individuals appear.
