Humification is the step in which the organic residues of detritus are converted into humus -- a dark, colloidal substance that resists further rapid breakdown and accumulates in the soil, improving its structure and water-holding capacity. Step 2. Mineralization, by contrast, is the step in which this already-formed humus is itself very gradually broken down further by continued microbial action, releasing simple inorganic nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate ions back into the soil solution.
