Step 1. Fragmentation. Detritivores such as earthworms and termites physically tear fresh detritus into smaller fragments, increasing the surface area exposed to further attack. Step 2. Leaching. Water percolating through the fragmented detritus dissolves water-soluble nutrients and carries them down into the soil, where they may be temporarily bound as unavailable salts. Step 3. Catabolism. Bacterial and fungal decomposers secrete enzymes onto the detritus, chemically breaking its complex organic molecules down into simpler compounds, some of which the microbes absorb for their own use. Step 4. Humification. The remaining organic residues accumulate into humus, a dark, colloidal, slow-decomposing substance that improves soil structure and water-holding capacity. Step 5. Mineralization. Humus is itself very gradually broken down further, releasing simple inorganic nutrients back into the soil solution for renewed uptake by plant roots. Step 6.
