Plant succession starts with pioneers (e.g. lichens on rock), passes through seral stages that each modify the habitat, and ends in a climax forest.
Definition — ecological succession:
- The progressive, orderly and more-or-less predictable change in the species composition of a community in a given area over time, until a relatively stable, self-perpetuating community — the climax community — develops in equilibrium with the environment.
- The whole sequence of communities that successively replace one another is called a sere, and each transitional community is a seral (stage) community.
- Primary succession starts on a bare, previously lifeless area (bare rock, new pond, sand dune); secondary succession starts where a community existed but was removed (abandoned farmland, burnt forest) — the latter is faster because soil is already present.
General process of plant succession (with example — a xerosere on bare rock):
- Pioneer stage: The first colonisers of the bare rock are crustose lichens, which can survive extreme dryness. They secrete acids that slowly weather the rock and, on dying, add organic matter, beginning soil formation.
- Moss stage: As a thin soil forms, mosses establish; they hold moisture and add more humus, deepening the soil.
- Herb / annual stage: Small herbs and annual grasses now grow, further enriching and deepening the soil.
- Grass / perennial stage: Perennial grasses and larger herbs replace the annuals as conditions improve. …
