GPP (Gross Primary Productivity): the total rate at which producers (autotrophs) capture and fix solar energy as organic matter (chemical energy) through photosynthesis, per unit area per unit time.
NPP (Net Primary Productivity): the rate of storage of organic matter (energy) in producer tissue after part of the fixed energy has been used up by the producers themselves in respiration (R).
