Atavism is the sudden reappearance of an ancestral trait; genetic drift randomly changes allele frequencies in small populations, sometimes founding genetically distinct new populations.

Atavism: The reappearance, in an individual, of a trait/character present in a distant ancestor but absent in recent generations — considered evidence of vestigial genetic potential retained in the genome even after a trait is no longer normally expressed (e.g. occasional occurrence of an extra pair of nipples, or a tail-like extension, in humans).

Two effects of genetic drift:
