Q.Define gene flow (gene migration). Explain its effect on the allele frequencies of both the population that individuals leave and the population that they join.
Step 1. Gene flow (gene migration) occurs when individuals move from one population to a geographically separate population of the same species and interbreed there.
Step 2. Migrating individuals carry their own alleles into the new population's gene pool.
Step 3. The population migrants LEAVE loses whatever alleles those individuals carried; the population migrants JOIN gains those alleles.
Step 4. Sustained gene flow over many generations tends to make the allele frequencies of the two populations more SIMILAR over time, since each supplies the other with a regular flow of its own alleles.
Gene flow changes both populations' allele frequencies (donor loses, recipient gains) and, sustained over time, homogenises allele frequencies between the two populations.
