Single Cell Protein (SCP) is protein-rich biomass obtained by culturing microorganisms -- bacteria, yeasts, fungi or algae -- on an industrial scale specifically as a source of protein for human or animal nutrition, bypassing conventional crop and livestock farming altogether.

Organisms commonly cultured for SCP include the blue-green alga (cyanobacterium) Spirulina, which can be grown readily, including on waste water enriched with nutrients; the bacterium Methylophilus methylotrophus, notable for extremely rapid growth and used in large-scale industrial SCP production; yeasts such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae; and filamentous fungi such as Fusarium venenatum, which is processed into a well-known commercial mycoprotein food product.

SCP is considered significant for meeting the world's growing food and protein demand for several connected reasons. Conventional agriculture struggles to keep pace with the combined food and protein demand of a still-growing population, a pressure worsened by diets shifting toward more meat, itself an inefficient way to convert grain into food energy, since it typically takes several kilograms of grain to produce just one kilogram of meat through animal farming. Microorganisms cultured for SCP reproduce and accumulate biomass extremely rapidly compared with any crop plant or farm animal; they can often be grown on comparatively cheap and abundant substrates, including agricultural or industrial waste materials; they require far less land and water per unit of protein produced than conventional crop or livestock farming; and they yield a biomass that is characteristically very rich in p …
