Step 1. Initiation: RNA polymerase (assisted by sigma factor in bacteria) binds to the promoter sequence, and the DNA double helix locally unwinds around it to form a transcription bubble, exposing the template strand.

Step 2. Elongation: RNA polymerase moves along the template strand in the 3' to 5' direction, synthesising the new RNA strand in the complementary 5' to 3' direction, adding ribonucleotides one at a time via complementary base pairing (with U pairing where the template has A).

Step 3. As the polymerase advances, DNA is unwound just ahead of it and re-anneals into a double helix just behind it, so only a short stretch is ever unwound at any instant. …
