Initiation: the small ribosomal subunit binds the mRNA near its 5' end and scans to the START codon (AUG); an initiator tRNA carrying methionine base-pairs with AUG, and the large subunit then joins to complete the functional ribosome.
Step 2. Elongation: the ribosome moves along the mRNA one codon at a time; at each codon, a matching charged aminoacyl-tRNA enters, a peptide bond forms between the new amino acid and the growing chain (via the ribosome's peptidyl transferase activity), and the ribosome translocates forward by one codon, ejecting the now-empty tRNA.
Step 3. This cycle repeats, lengthening the polypeptide chain by one amino acid each time, until a STOP codon (UAA, UAG or UGA) is reached. …
