Exon and intron of a DNA (gene): A eukaryotic gene is typically split (interrupted). The exons are the coding/expressed sequences — the parts of the primary RNA transcript that are retained in the final, mature mRNA after processing and that actually get translated (or are otherwise part of the functional transcript). The introns are the intervening, non-coding sequences that lie between exons in the primary transcript; they are removed by the process of splicing before the mature mRNA leaves the nucleus.
