Genic balance theory explains sex determination by the X:autosome ratio (in Drosophila); birds use the ZW system, in which the female is the heterogametic sex.

Genic balance theory: Proposed by Calvin Bridges (based on work in Drosophila), this theory states that sex is determined not simply by the presence/absence of the Y chromosome, but by the ratio of the number of X-chromosomes to the number of haploid sets of autosomes (X:A ratio). A ratio of 1.0 or more gives a female, a ratio of 0.5 or less gives a male, and intermediate ratios give an intersex.

Sex determination in birds (ZW type): Unlike mammals (where the male is heterogametic, XY), in birds the female is the heterogametic sex (ZW) and the male is homogametic (ZZ).

Cross: Male (ZZ) × Female (ZW)
