Geitonogamy is pollen transfer between two different flowers of the same plant — needs a pollinating agent like cross-pollination, but genetically it behaves like self-pollination.

Pollination is classified by the source of pollen into three types:

  1. Autogamy — pollen is transferred within the same flower.
  2. Geitonogamy — pollen is transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of a different flower borne on the SAME plant.
  3. Xenogamy — pollen is transferred to the stigma of a flower on a genetically different plant.

Although geitonogamy requires a pollinating agent (insect, wind, etc.) and is morphologically similar to cross-pollination, both flowers involved belong to the same plant and carry an identical genotype, so genetically it is equivalent to autogamy — no new gene combination is introduced.
