Copper matte (mainly Cu2S + FeS) is converted to blister copper in a silica-lined converter by oxidising FeS to slag and letting Cu2O self-reduce Cu2S.

  1. Composition of copper matte: Copper matte is a mixture of cuprous sulphide (Cu2SCu_2S) and ferrous sulphide (FeSFeS), obtained by smelting the roasted copper ore (chalcopyrite) with silica and coke.
  2. Extraction of copper from matte (Bessemerisation): Matte is charged into a silica-lined converter and a blast of hot air is passed: 2FeS+3O2→2FeO+2SO22FeS + 3O_2 \rightarrow 2FeO + 2SO_2 FeO+SiO2→FeSiO3FeO + SiO_2 \rightarrow FeSiO_3 (slag, removed) …
