Froth flotation separates sulphide ore from gangue using a collector and a frother; zone refining exploits the difference in impurity solubility between solid and molten metal.

(i) In froth flotation of sulphide ores, sodium ethyl xanthate acts as a collector: it adsorbs on to the surface of the sulphide mineral particles and renders that surface hydrophobic (water-repelling/oil-loving), so the particles preferentially attach to air bubbles. Pine oil acts as a frother: it stabilises the froth (foam) of air bubbles at the top of the flotation tank, so the mineral-laden bubbles rise and stay as a stable froth long enough to be skimmed off, while the wetted (hydrophilic) gangue sinks.
