Nylon-6,6 is a condensation polyamide of a diamine and a diacid, each with 6 carbon atoms — hence the name.

Nylon-6,6 is prepared by the condensation polymerisation of two monomers, each containing 6 carbon atoms:

  1. Hexamethylenediamine, H2NH_2N-(CH2)6(CH_2)_6-NH2NH_2 (1,6-diaminohexane)
  2. Adipic acid, HOOCHOOC-(CH2)4(CH_2)_4-COOHCOOH (hexanedioic acid)

The amine and acid groups react repeatedly, eliminating water at each step, to form amide (-CONH-) linkages, building up the long polyamide chain (hence the class name 'nylon'). The reaction is typically carried out under high pressure and temperature.
