Question 31 of 58

Q.What should be the value of the shunt to be connected in parallel to a galvanometer of resistance G, so that 1/n part of the main current will pass through the shunt? OR Equal number of identical cells are joined in series and again in parallel. Under what condition, will the currents in both the cases be the same?

To send exactly 1/n of the main current through a shunt in parallel with a galvanometer of resistance G, the shunt must have resistance S = (n − 1)G.

Let the main current be I. We want the shunt to carry I_shunt = I/n, so the galvanometer carries the remaining current I_g = I − I/n = (n − 1)I/n.
