Q.a) What is wavefront of a wave? b) Prove the laws of reflection by using Hygens' principle. OR In Young's double slit experiment, what is the effect on the interference pattern if, i) the distance between the two slits is halved. ii) the distance between the screen and the plane of slits is doubled. iii) one of the slits is covered with translucent paper.

a) Wavefront: A wavefront is the locus (surface) of all the points of a medium that are vibrating in the same phase at a given instant. It is perpendicular to the direction of propagation (ray) at every point.
b) Laws of reflection via Huygens' principle:
Let be a plane wavefront incident on reflecting surface at angle to the normal, travelling with speed . When point of the wavefront touches the surface, point still has to travel distance to reach the surface (say at point ).
By Huygens' principle, while travels to , the secondary wavelet from spreads out and travels the same distance (since both travel in the same medium with the same speed) in the same time. The new wavefront is the tangent plane from the reflecting surface.
