Deletion normally removes only the file's directory entry, not its data — so recovery is possible via the Recycle Bin, backups, recovery software (Recuva/PhotoRec), disk-repair tools (chkdsk) or professional labs, provided the freed space hasn't been overwritten.

Why recovery is possible at all. When you delete a file, the operating system typically just marks its directory entry as removed and its disk blocks as free — the actual contents remain physically on the device until some new file happens to overwrite them. Recovery methods work by finding and re-linking that still-present data. This is also why the first rule of recovery is: stop using the affected drive immediately.

Ways to recover deleted data

  1. Recycle Bin / Trash. A file deleted normally (Delete key) is only moved to the Recycle Bin — open it, right-click the file → Restore. (Shift+Delete bypasses this, needing method 3.)
  2. Restore from a backup. The most reliable route when it exists:
    • Windows File History or a system image backup;
    • Cloud sync services (OneDrive, Google Drive) — they keep deleted-file bins and version history for weeks.
  3. Data-recovery software. Tools like Recuva (Windows, friendly GUI), PhotoRec/TestDisk (free, cross-platform) scan the raw disk for orphaned file data and rebuild it. Install and recover to a different drive so you don't overwrite the target.

Ways to recover from a corrupted device

  1. File-system repair. For a pen drive/HDD that shows errors or asks to be formatted: run chkdsk with the repair option on that drive (Windows: chkdsk E: /f) to fix file-system corruption; often the files reappear. …
