Roots that do not arise from the radicle but instead sprout from the stem or other plant parts are termed adventitious roots.

In the majority of dicotyledonous plants, the radicle itself elongates directly to form the primary root, and this root together with all its branches makes up the tap root system, as in mustard. In monocotyledonous plants, the short-lived primary root is instead replaced by numerous roots arising from the base of the stem, forming the fibrous root system, as in wheat.

  • Both the tap root system and the fibrous root system trace their origin back to the radicle of the germinating embryo, either directly or by replacement at the stem base.
