An entrepreneur performs several functions; five important ones are idea generation/opportunity identification, organising and assembling the factors of production, risk and uncertainty bearing, decision-making, and innovation.

Any Five Functions of an Entrepreneur

  1. Idea generation and opportunity identification – The entrepreneur scans the environment, identifies a viable business opportunity, generates a business idea and prepares a project plan for it. This is the starting point of every enterprise.
  2. Organising and assembling resources – The entrepreneur brings together the factors of production — land, labour, capital, machinery and raw materials — and arranges finance, so that production can actually begin and continue.
  3. Risk-bearing and uncertainty-taking – Business returns are uncertain; the entrepreneur invests money and resources with no guarantee of profit and personally bears the risk of loss, which is the most distinctive function.
  4. Decision-making – The entrepreneur takes all the key decisions: what to produce, how much, by which method, where to locate, how to price, and whom to employ. Sound decisions determine the success of the venture. …
