Q.Explain the role of entrepreneurship in the economic development of a country.
Entrepreneurship is regarded as one of the key drivers of a country's economic development, and its contribution can be explained under several heads.
1. Generation of employment -- new ventures, especially small and medium enterprises, create jobs directly within the enterprise and indirectly in the businesses that supply or depend on it.
2. Capital formation -- entrepreneurs mobilise idle public savings and their own funds, converting them into productive capital assets such as plant, machinery, and infrastructure.
3. Balanced regional development -- when entrepreneurs set up ventures in backward or rural areas, often encouraged by tax and other incentives, industry and income spread more evenly instead of concentrating only in already-developed regions.
4. Innovation -- new products, production methods, and ways of reaching customers are introduced disproportionately by entrepreneurs, who are typically more willing to take on the risk of a new idea than established large firms.
5. Increase in national and per capita income -- by creating new goods, services, and jobs, entrepreneurship adds directly to a country's national output and, over time, raises per capita income.
6. Backward and forward linkages -- a new enterprise creates demand for the raw material and components it needs (a backward linkage to its suppliers) and creates new products or services for others to use (a forward linkage), each stimulating further economic activity elsewhere in the economy.
7. Promotion of exports -- many new-generation ventures, particularly in technology and services, earn foreign exchange through exports, strengthening the country's balance of payments.
8. Improvement in the standard of living -- by widening the choice of goods and services and raising incomes, entrepreneurship contributes over time to a better standard of living for the population at large.
It is precisely because of this wide-ranging contribution that the Government of India has, in recent years, actively promoted new ventures through schemes such as Startup India.
Entrepreneurship promotes economic development through employment generation, capital formation, balanced regional development, innovation, higher national and per capita income, backward/forward linkages, export promotion, and a rising standard of living.
