Q.Describe the classification of bacteria based on their morphology (shape).
Bacterial morphology - the study of bacterial shape - recognises a small number of basic forms. Cocci are spherical or ball-shaped bacteria, which may occur singly or in characteristic groupings such as pairs or clusters. Bacilli are rod-shaped bacteria. Spirilla are spiral or corkscrew-shaped bacteria. Most bacterial species keep one of these shapes consistently, and the shape, together with any characteristic grouping, is often used to help describe or identify a particular kind of bacterium. A smaller number of species, called pleomorphic bacteria (Rhizobium being a commonly cited example), are able to vary in shape rather than showing one fixed form throughout their life.
[!ANSWER]
The morphological classes of bacteria are cocci (spherical), bacilli (rod-shaped) and spirilla (spiral), with pleomorphic bacteria as the exception that does not keep one fixed shape.
