A cell with no flagella at all is called atrichous. A cell bearing a single flagellum at just one pole (end) of the cell is monotrichous. A cell with flagella present at both poles is amphitrichous. A cell with a tuft, or bundle, of several flagella clustered together at one pole is lophotrichous.
