RNA is a versatile nucleic acid with three primary types, each playing a distinct and essential role in gene expression, particularly in the process of protein synthesis.

RNA, or Ribonucleic Acid, is a fundamental biological macromolecule that plays several critical roles in living organisms, especially in the expression of genetic information. While DNA stores the genetic blueprint, RNA acts as a crucial intermediary and effector molecule, translating that blueprint into functional proteins. The process of protein synthesis, known as translation, relies heavily on the coordinated action of different types of RNA.

Let's explore the specific functions of the major types of RNA:

  • Messenger RNA (mRNA):

The genetic information for synthesising proteins is encoded in the DNA. In eukaryotic cells, DNA resides within the nucleus, while protein synthesis occurs in the cytoplasm on ribosomes. mRNA acts as the crucial messenger, carrying the genetic instructions from the DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm. It is a temporary copy of a gene, transcribed from a DNA template, and its sequence dictates the order of amino acids in the polypeptide chain.

    Note

This function directly corresponds to option (A): "It is a carrier of genetic information from DNA to ribosomes synthesising polypeptides."

  • Transfer RNA (tRNA):

During protein synthesis, the mRNA sequence is read in triplets called codons. Each codon specifies a particular amino acid. tRNA molecules are responsible for accurately bringing the correct amino acids to the ribosome according to the sequence of codons on the mRNA. Each tRNA molecule has a specific anticodon loop that base-pairs with a complementary codon on the mRNA, and at its other end, it carries the corresponding amino acid. It acts as an adapter molecule, ensuring that the genetic code is translated into the correct protein sequence.

    Important

There are specific tRNA molecules for each of the 20 standard amino acids, ensuring precision in protein assembly.

    Note

This function directly corresponds to option (B): "It carries amino acids to ribosomes."
