Avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, is a viral disease relevant to human health and disease (Immune System / communicable diseases, NCERT Class 12 Biology):
- Causative agent: Influenza type A viruses, the well-known virulent strain being H5N1 (named after its surface proteins haemagglutinin and neuraminidase).
- Hosts: Chiefly birds — poultry (chickens, ducks) and migratory wild birds, which act as carriers and spread the virus.
- Transmission: By contact with infected birds, their droppings or contaminated surfaces; humans in close contact with infected poultry may become infected. Human-to-human spread is rare but a pandemic concern.
- Symptoms in humans: High fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and severe respiratory distress (pneumonia), which can be fatal. …
