Primary antibodies (mostly IgM) form slowly and in small amounts on first antigen contact; secondary antibodies (mostly IgG) form quickly and in large amounts on later contact because of memory cells.

When an antigen enters the body for the first time, the immune system mounts a PRIMARY immune response. The antibodies produced then are:

  • Slow to appear (long lag period)
  • Produced in low quantity
  • Predominantly of the IgM class

Memory B-cells formed during this response remain in the body. On a later (second or subsequent) exposure to the same antigen, a much stronger SECONDARY immune response occurs. The antibodies produced then are:

  • Quick to appear (short lag period)
